To my disappointment, our visit to Carlsbad Caverns National Park was too early in the year to see the famous bat flight. If we had visited a month or two later we could have witnessed this spectacular event. We may not have seen any bats, but we sure did smell them as we entered into the cave. And here's a tidbit of information for you. The caverns were actually discovered by a miner of bat guarno, a very potent fertilizer, which was being used to fertilize citrus groves in southern California.
Joe and I chose to enter the caverns at the natural entrance. This is also the location for the nightly Bat Flight when it is in season. We walked downhill for a mile. It took us an hour to walk in, but since the temperature remains a constant 56 degrees it was enjoyable. With every turn we were presented with another unusual structure. When we got our fill of stalactites and stalagmites, we rode back up in the elevator to ground level.

When I went to Austin it wasn't the right time of year for the bats either. Bummer.
