The Great Sphinx, measuring 57 meters long by 20 feet high, is the largest monolith statue in the world. Having been built of soft sandstone, it would have disappeared long ago had it not been buried in the sand for such long periods of time.
Modern Egyptologists believe that the Great Sphinx was built in approximately 2500 B.C. by the pharaoh Khafre, the supposed builder of the second pyramid at Giza.
